The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton

It is 1866 and Walter Moody has come to New Zealand to try and strike it rich in the gold rush. He meets a gathering of local men who have met to discuss a series of troubling recent events. Moody is soon drawn into the mystery. This  gripping page-turner evokes a mid-nineteenth-century world boom and bust.

Readers who enjoyed this book also enjoyed: Harvest by Jim Crace, Unexploded by Alison MacLeod, and The Marrying of Chani Kaufman by Eve Harris.
