The flight of Gemma Hardy by Margot Livesey

when her widower father drowns at sea, Gemma is taken from Iceland to Scotland to live with her kind Uncle and his family.  After her Uncle
dies, Gemma realizes she is sort of a "Cinderella", with the appropriate
stepsisters.  Gemma is sent to a boarding school - Claypoole - but as a working girl aka unpaid servant.  Gemmas' life changes after the school goes bankrupt and she is working as a nanny, and falls in love.
Further adventures await!   This novel takes place in the 60's & 70's in Scotland, and is a modern day Jane Eyre.  I loved it, and now I'm re-reading Jane Eyre, just to compare the two.
