The last shepherd - Martin Etchart

This I found to be riveting, perhaps it was the sheep!
Mathieu Etcheberri wants to leave his Basque family's Arizona sheep ranch and go to college, but his father says no, he needs him at the ranch.  Then his father is killed in an accident and Mathieu decides to go to France,  meet the Basque  relatives  he's never met and try to get rid of the ranch to someone there so he can get on with his life without sheep.  Not surprisingly Mathieu falls in love, settles an old rift with his family, and learns to love the sheep.  There are many messages about family, loyalty, duty, culture, and a 'curl up in a chair afternoon' sort of book.  try it
