Dexter in the Dark, by Jeff Lindsay

This book is the third in Lindsay's series about a Miami blood spatter expert who is a serial killer in his spare time. This book marks a turning point for Dexter, in that the “Dark Passenger” inside him is AWOL for most of the book, scared away early on by a presence that stalks Dexter throughout the book. This provides an interesting twist: What happens to a killer when he loses the thing that has been both support and demon? In addition to his inner troubles, Dexter is facing the prospect of marriage to girlfriend Rita and fatherhood to two children just as damaged as him. I didn't care much for Lindsay's departure from the central storyline into the nature of evil, but otherwise I found it to be a great read. -Inanna
